Memory Foam Neck Pillow
In the 1970's, NASA (National Aeronautics and Space
Administration) brought us another innovation that was originally designed for the astronauts' comfort during long
periods of sitting during the early space flights. It was first introduced to the commercial market early in the
1990's and has now been applied to bring us the memory foam neck pillow. Neck pain can become a chronic problem for
many of us. In some cases it may be rooted in arthritis developing in the joints of the neck as we age. This is
probably the most serious case.
For others it may be caused by activities of our youth such as
participating in sports or engaging in work that requires carrying heavy loads or jobs like construction. Also jobs
that require long periods of sitting, without proper posture being concentrated upon, can lead to problems that may
well compound as we grow older. Today's pace and daily pressures can also tend to aggravate the condition. Without
proper relief of the stress, especially during a night's sleep, each day can start with literally, a
'pain-in-the-neck.'
Having adequate support and alignment of the head and neck is
essential to begin to turn around the constant problem and the associated pain. This is where the uniqueness of the
memory foam used in neck pillows can make a world of difference. Made primarily from material sometimes known as
Visco-elastic foam, it absorbs heat from the body to give and mold to the shape of the neck and still offer firm
support. This makes for proper alignment of the spine and neck and relieves the pressure and thus the muscle
tension.
An important factor to consider when looking for a new neck
pillow is the density of the foam. It is suggested to look for at least a 4 pound density to assure long life (5
years or longer). Also know that this technology will provide a hypo-allergenic and toxic-free pillow that remains
resistant to mites, so using it safely for such a long period of time is not a concern. The determining factor for
getting a replacement is simply when the material does not return to its original shape after a night's
sleep.
A true neck pillow would be one that would be shaped perhaps
like a dog-bone or a half-circle. These would probably be likely marketed as travel pillows. By their design, these
will fit comfortably around the neck and offer support for the shoulders and provide the proper alignment of the
spine. If you will need to be in a sitting position to sleep, these will mold and support the neck to prevent the
head from falling into an uncomfortable position.
Another sound investment with a lot of flexibility might be the
"4 in 1 Memory Foam Pillow" by Deluxe Comfort. The simple design has a flat surface and an arching top that can be
used like a roll for your neck, held between or under your knees, and propped under the feet to increase
circulation and reduce swelling. With its high density foam, convenient size and shape, this might well prove to be
a priceless item for around $20.
You may find that the simple addition of a high quality memory
foam neck pillow will bring almost immediate relief and prevent the need for more drastic measures having to be
taken in your later years. It can be a liberating experience to start each day fully refreshed and
pain-free.
